About

The Full Story

José R. Lage's journey as a luthier began in his teens, guided by the hands of his father, a renowned Cuban luthier. His father cleverly disguised lessons in instrument making as toy crafting, teaching José the art of shaping wood with precision and passion. By the age of 15, José had already crafted his first Cuban tres, which was sold to a European musician for several thousand dollars. That moment marked the beginning of a career where his craftsmanship was recognized as being on par with his father’s. Over the years, José expanded his expertise, learning techniques from master luthiers across Mexico, France, and Italy. Together with his father, they have created instruments for legends like Pancho Amat, the Buena Vista Social Club, Leo Brouwer, and many more, cementing their legacy in the world of string instrument artistry.
